Description
Slurs (Ligados)
There are two important reasons for the study of the slur technique.
a) In order to strengthen the fingers.
b) To compel the left hand to take the correct position on the fret board.
Ascending slurs
This is probably the sole instance in which I would advise that the fingers be lifted quite high so as to fall on the strings with impetus and strength. This will result in the notes being heard more clearly and loudly.
Descending slurs
So as to play these slurs correctly:
a) At the outset both fingers that are required must be positioned simultaneously except, of course, if the second note is an open string.
b) The finger which effects the slur must move downwards, stop at the neighbouring string and automatically be lifted for repetition or for movement elsewhere. Exactly the same slur movement applies to the first string also.
c) The static finger must resist the downward motion created by the finger effecting the slur.
Combined slurs
These are nothing more than the combination of the two preceding types of slur. In this category we meet a great variety of combinations of three or more tied notes.
