Johann Sebastian Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin belong undoubtedly to those masterworks of the violin literature which every violinist should study thoroughly and come to grips with. It is my concern in this new edition to offer the player encouragement and help in mastering a great variety of problems. The present work is the result of many years' study of Bach's music and the intellectual climate of his time. I have tried to give consideration both to requirements of a stylistic nature and to the contemporary technical and tonal possibilities of our instrument. Fingerings, bowings and other annotations stem from my colleagues and, particularly, for young violinists.
