Horizontal exercises appear easy. This would be so if they had different fingerings. However, on looking closer at the existing fingerings one notices that the hand must move continuously considerable distances over the finger board.

This is the purpose of these exercises; to exercise the hand so as to be able to change positions speedily, easily and precisely. Their aim therefore, is to improve that part of the left hand technique which is responsible for most mistakes.

In several of the Horizontal Exercises there are many different fingerings. The 1st has six, the 2nd five, the 3rd three and the remaining one only.
The first four exercises are written for the second string only but they should be played on the other five strings as well.
As a result of the constant movement of the left hand, these exercises should not be tiring or dangerous (for the tendons) as long as the positions are changed with a relaxed and light hand.
