Blue Raï is modeled on Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite for solo cello.
The work consist of five linked movements. Each part highlights a particular mode of play on the instrument, in which classical or novel parameters (attack, phrasing, rubao or non rubato, dynamics, rhythms, tone colours etc.) come together.
The piece is a double homage: to highly notated Western music and to the traditional music of Nothern Africa (Algeria), the inflections of which are naturally amplified by the cello.
