With the first words “Blessed are those who suffer because they are to be comforted”, this work does not correspond to the Latin mass for the dead, which is supposed to help the deceased to be redeemed in the form of a supplication. Rather, Brahms tries to give consolation to the bereaved with words from the Old and New Testament set to music.
